WELCOME

WELCOME to the Take Joy Society. We are a group of ladies who first met because of our love of Tasha Tudor's art and lifestyle. We are broadening our focus to include other artists/writers/people of interest who embody Tasha's philosophy to Take Joy in all the good that life has to offer. Here you will find a record of our get-togethers and resources to help you see that the gloom of the world is but a shadow so that you, too, can Take Joy by Creating Joy in your life!

Shoe Cutting Party Get-Together

The Take Joy Society members attended a Shoe Cutting Party at member Carol's house today to do our part for Sole Hope. . . .

Sole Hope

The Sole Hope organization began just a few years ago when Asher Collie came upon a YouTube video about the problem of jiggers and the devastating impact the insect had on the shoeless children in Uganda.  Jiggers burrow into a person's feet (and hands) and lays its eggs there, destroying the tissue in the foot, creating a wound that can lead to other diseases.

Carol showed us a short video about the Sole Hope mission. . . .

Then we gathered around her table to cut the donated jeans apart. . . .

We were given plastic patterns to draw the pattern onto the denim. . . .

Then we cut out the pieces. . . .

Carol cut out the heel pattern again in plastic to be used as reinforcement in the shoe. . . .

We were able to cut out 19 pairs of shoes. . . .

Carol will send these to the North Carolina offices of Sole Hope.  From there they will be sent to Africa where money donations will pay local workers to sew these pieces together and glue them onto soles cut out from tires.  The Sole Hope group will then bring children from villages to their Outreach House to have their feet treated to remove the jiggers.  They'll be educated on how to prevent jigger infestation in the future and given a pair of shoes to wear.

We took a break for Carol's Spring-inspired tea and cake, chocolate-covered strawberries, and Chocolate-Peanut butter Easter eggs. . . .

It was Chris's birthday this month so we sang happy birthday to her. . . .

Then Carol showed us this video about Sole Hope's ministry in Uganda. . . .

Cindy's church has had a shoe cutting party for their Vacation Bible School.  She said the children especially love participating knowing that their efforts were helping other children.  They brought in their old jeans, drew the patterns on the denim, and cut out the pieces.

One of the advantages of only sending these fabric pieces to Uganda instead of collecting read-made shoes for the children is there is no risk that the fabric pieces would be misdirected once they reach Uganda where corruption is rampant.
