  1. In my family Valentine's Day is a personal thing between only the people involved in the relationship. We don't really celebrate with anyone other than spouses and/or significant others. Overall I have a pretty mercenary attitude about Valentine's Day, a direct result of my childhood, I'm sure. I consider it a "Hallmark holiday" - one that's been increasingly ginned up by the jewelers, florists, restaurants, card makers & candymakers of the world to sell things. My parents didn't have any extra $ for Valentine treats when I was a kid. I don't think they even gave each other cards. But back in the day, Valentine's was not the competitive event it seems to be now. The overarching message is "you're a loser if [A] you don't have someone or [B] your someone is NOT giving you beautiful expensive presents - like the things we sell. Although truth be told, EVERY holiday seems to be an excuse for that now. We can't even get through Memorial Day without umpteen ads for mattress sales! So I like Susan's ideas for low-key homey, homemade celebrations & treats. Great for those who want a friends & family Valentine's Day, and great for those who want to keep things "romantic only" as well. ❤️

    1. It's a good holiday to get us through winter! And it's always good to promote love amongst people who are merely acquaintances. When my kids were in school you were only allowed to give Valentines to your classmates if you gave everyone a Valentine. When I was a child it must have been the same because I remember relishing a decorated paper bag full of Valentines! ❤️
